Iconic mid-century kitchens
Cubex furniture was invented in the late 1920s by Louis-Herman De Koninck, the leading Belgian modernist architect, based on scientific studies by T. Riolle on the drudgery of housework.
Then the kitchen known as "CIAMB" was presented by the Belgian section of CIAM (International Committee of Modern Architecture, organised by Le Corbusier in 1928) in 1930 at CIAM III in Brussels to illustrate new solutions for minimum housing standards.
From the end of 1931, the Van De Ven company marketed the kitchen with the name CUBEX, always under the supervision of L.H. De Koninck.
Cubex occupies a very important place in the history of design.
By 1930, CUBEX was the most advanced solution of its time in kitchen layout and had left its permanent mark on the industry. Today's standard width of household electrical appliances (and thus the basic kitchen module) is 60 cm thanks to Cubex's work at the time with various European manufacturers, and the widespread presence of Cubex kitchen furniture in Belgium.
Cubex sold thousands of kitchens until the early 60's which made it an iconic piece of furniture design.
